Long-Term Undesirable Effects of Scabies.

scabies_s8_doctor_exam_arm

Scabies is a skin condition caused by infection with scabies mites (Sarcoptes scabiei). Scabies mites are microscopic parasite organisms that burrow deep inside the skin, causing inflammation, itching and rash. Later symptoms of scabies are: crusty aspect of the skin, pustules, blisters and nodules. Most of the symptoms generated by scabies are actually allergic reactions to the mites’ eggs and feces which are toxic to the human body. Skin rash is the first symptom to occur when suffering from scabies, emerging after only a few days from contamination with the parasite mites. Scabies rash is very persistent and it can last for up to several weeks or months after the mite infestation has been eradicated.

Scabies is very contagious and the parasite mites responsible for causing the disease can be either acquired directly, by entering in contact with contaminated people or indirectly, by entering in contact with contaminated objects. Scabies is widespread in orphanages and nursing homes, due to overcrowding and poor hygiene. In order to prevent the occurrence of scabies, it is very important to maintain a good level of personal hygiene and to avoid sharing personal items with other people.

The mites responsible for causing scabies usually infest less exposed regions of the skin, such as armpits, feet, the areas between the toes, buttocks and pubic area. Scabies is usually diagnosed upon clinical signs of the disease. Although scabies mites are microscopic, their presence can be easily revealed by the traces they leave on the surface of the skin. The mites’ burrows can be observed with the naked eye and they are a clear indicator of scabies. In order to confirm the clinical diagnose, doctors often take samples of the inflamed skin for analysis under the microscope.

The medical treatment for scabies works on multiple levels; some medications are aimed at killing the parasite mites, while other medications are prescribed for alleviating the symptoms generated at the level of the skin. The treatment for scabies usually consists of topical creams or lotions for external use. Permethrin-containing creams are very effective in overcoming the infestation with mites and they are commonly prescribed in the treatment of scabies.

How To Know If You Are Burning Muscle Not Fats?

Build-Muscle-and-Burn-Fat-Copy

The danger of any weight loss program is that you may lose more muscles than fats. This is not healthy at all because when you lose muscles, your metabolism will slow down and your body will in turn retain more fats.

So how do you know if you are burning more muscles than fats? There is a simple and inexpensive way to find out.

Firstly, you must know that whenever your body burn fats for energy, a certain chemical call ketones are released. “When your body releases ketones, it is chemical evidence that you’re consuming your own stored fat.” said the famous MD Dr Atkins.

Image result for muscle

You want your body to burn the food you have eaten and even more so if you are obese, your body fat for energy and not your muscles.

One simple yet inexpensive way of knowing whether you are burning your body fat or muscles is to test for the production of ketones. If you are releasing ketones, you are burning fats instead of your muscles. If you are you are on a weight loss program and you are not producing ketones, then your program is not effective because you are burning other energy sources such as carbs or your own muscles. That means your weight loss program is virtually ineffective and can even be dangerous.

Ketones strips to test for ketones in your urine are readily available in most pharmacies. These strips are usually used by diabetics but are also a wonderful tool to check how effective your weight loss program is.

Know the 4 Side Effects of Vasectomy Male Birth Control.

Of all the many variations of birth control options available for both men and women, choosing for the best one to use and practice is the common dilemma of most people. Birth control methods basically range from non-prescription options, which one can buy and use without prescriptions from specialists; prescription methods, the ones that require doctors’ recommendation before usage; sterilization; and the natural/abstinence birth control practices.

Image result for vasectomy complications

Despite the wide variations of contraceptive methods to choose from, most sexually active males prefer the sterilization method as their means of birth control. Vasectomy, which is the medical term for male sterilization, is favored by most men today because it is permanent and its efficiency rate is higher compared to other forms of contraception. In this kind of sterilization process, the tubes in a male’s scrotum are tied or sealed so that the sperm cells cannot get through the semen.

However, there are reported claims of side effects in vasectomy procedures. Some doctors and medical specialists even contradict to the efficiency and safety of this kind of permanent contraceptive method. Even though some of the noted adverse effects are not supported by clinical studies, it is still best to be informed on the procedures’ possible complications before choosing this kind of permanent birth control method.

The following are three of the negative side effects of vasectomy male birth control method:

1. Susceptible to cancer

Unknown to most males, cancer is one of the adverse side effects brought by vasectomy. This happens when a man’s body reacts negatively to the changes in his reproductive organ. There are instances when a man’s immune system confused the sperm as a harmful substance. As a normal reaction of the body, antibodies are then automatically released, thus, making the arteries clogged. Note that when arteries are clogged, cancer cells are more likely to develop.

Hernia; Everything You Need To Know About It.

inguinal-hernia

Hernia symptoms are usually related to the bulge that hernia causes. In The early phases you only notice that small lump that does not hurt when it is touched. As the illness advances the bulge, or herniation as some specialists call it becomes painful and keeps swallowing. The lump becomes more visible when you cough or sneeze and in most cases it can be pushed back with your hand, but it will come out again in a couple of minutes. If it cannot be pushed back then it is possible that you are suffering from a strangulated hernia.

Image result for Hernia

When you have strangulated hernia the tissue or organ that pushes out has had its blood supply cut. In this case you need to visit a doctor in short time because the situation can get worse as time passes.

Also, if you are suffering from asymptomatic reducible hernia, the signs and symptoms are a little different.
First of all, pain can appear before the affected area begins to swallow and the lump is discovered. Besides the original lump you may discover another lump in the groin or in the abdominal wall. The herniation’s size may vary depending on your position – It is bigger when you stand and smaller when you lie down.

Everything About The Side Effects of Muscle Relaxants.

Everything About The Side Effects of Muscle Relaxants.

Side effects are problems that occur when treatment goes beyond the desired effect or problems that occur in addition to the desired therapeutic effect. When side effects of necessary medication are severe, sometimes a second medication, lifestyle change, dietary change, or other measure may help to minimize them.

Drug manufacturers are required to list all known side effects of their products.  Fatigue, nausea, vomiting, decreased blood cell counts, hair loss, and mouth sores are instances of side effects of cancer treatment that occur in addition to the desired therapeutic effect. A hemorrhage from the use of too much anticoagulant (such as heparin) is a side effect caused by treatment going beyond the desired effect. As with all drugs, some people react badly to antidepressants, while side effects can seem quite mild in others. The irony here of course is that, helpful as antidepressants may be for some people at some times, these side effects can be very depressing in themselves.

Image result for muscle relaxants

Because no one antidepressant has been proven to be any more effective than any other, the choice of which drug to prescribe often rests on their different side effects. Drowsiness or dizziness, possible addiction or dependence, dry mouth or urinary retention are some of the possible side effects of muscle relaxants. Muscle relaxants are often prescribed in the treatment of acute low back pain in an attempt to improve the initial limitations in range of motion from muscle spasm and to interrupt the pain-spasm-pain cycle. Limiting muscle spasm and improving range of motion will prepare the patient for therapeutic exercise.

Muscle relaxants work by acting on the central nervous system. In the United States, they are available only with a physician’s prescription. Some muscle relaxants are available in Canada without a prescription. Most come only in tablet form. However, methocarbamol (Robaxin) is available in both tablet and injectable forms. Examples of muscle relaxants are carisoprodol (Soma), chlorzoxazone (Parafon Forte DSC), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), and methocarbamol (Robaxin).

Muscle relaxants are usually prescribed along with rest, exercise, physical therapy, or other treatments. Although the drugs may  provide relief, they should never be considered a substitute for these other forms of treatment. These drugs may make the injury feel so much better that one is tempted to go back to normal activity, but doing too much too soon can actually make the injury worse. Other common side effects or muscle relaxants are vision changes, such as double vision or blurred vision; lightheadedness; drowsiness; and dry mouth.

Using Hot Chili Peppers to Tame Surgical Pain.

Chili-Pepper

Using Hot Chili Peppers to Tame Surgical Pain.

The anticipated pain of surgery, and even post-operative pain, is keeping a lot of patients from going for that much needed treatment. Although anesthesia has been effective for keeping a patient asleep, immobile, and out of pain during complicated surgeries — it can hardly prevent pain from recurring once the patient wakes up.

Due to the limitations of anesthesia, the medical and research community has been looking for a suitable substitute or alternative. Recently, scientists have made experiments on substances that are used to make hot sauce. Surgeons have tried to use the chemical that gives chili peppers their “fire” as an experimental anesthetic by directly pouring the said substance into open wounds during knee replacement and a few other highly painful operations. The experiments made use of an ultra-purified version of capsaicin to avoid infection. Volunteers were under placed under anesthesia so that they don’t feel the initial burn.

Image result for hot chili pepper surgical pain

Treating surgically exposed nerves with a high dose of capsaicin will numb them for weeks, so that patients suffer less pain and require fewer narcotic painkillers as they heal. According to Dr. Eske Aasvang, a pain specialist in Denmark who is testing the substance, “We wanted to exploit this numbness.”

For centuries, chili peppers have been part of folk remedy and heat-inducing capsaicin creams are a familiar drugstore cure for muscle spasms. Today, however, the spice is also commercially “hot” due to research showing how capsaicin targets key pain-sensing cells in a unique way. Aside from California-based Anesiva Inc.’s attempt to harness that burn for more focused pain relief, Harvard University researchers are also mixing capsaicin with another anesthetic drug in hopes of developing epidurals that would not confine women to bed during childbirth, or dental injections that don’t numb the whole mouth. At the National Institutes of Health, scientists hope that by early next year, they can begin testing in advanced cancer patients a capsaicin variant that is 1,000 times more potent, to see if it can zap their intractable pain.

Nerve cells that sense a type of long-term throbbing pain contain a receptor, called TRPV1. Capsaicin binds to this receptor and works to produce a painkilling action on specific pain-receiving fibers.

How Are Brain Contusions Different from Brain Concussions?

o-CONCUSSION-facebook

For a problem as pervasive as traumatic brain injury one would think that the different forms it can take would be widely known and understood. However, in my practice of community-based neurology I find this is not the case. Patients and their families are seldom familiar with the concepts of cerebral (brain) contusion and concussion, and a common error is to believe that they are basically the same, except that a contusion is a more severe form of a concussion.

Before exploring the differences between these two terms, let’s first acknowledge how they are alike:

* Both are due to head trauma.
* Both are common.
* Both are serious.

But that’s where the similarities end. The differences between cerebral contusions and concussions can be boiled down to two basic concepts:

* Contusions are localized, while concussions are widespread.
* Contusions are macroscopic, while concussions are microscopic.

To flesh out these concepts more fully we’ll need to discuss brain anatomy, brain physiology and brain-imaging technologies.

A contusion is a bruise. At one time or another everyone has bruised himself or herself, as, for example, when they banged a forearm against a hard object. This caused bleeding within or beneath the skin. In the days following the injury it turned purple and perhaps a variety of other colors as the body’s repair mechanisms degraded and absorbed the red blood cells that had escaped from the injured blood vessels.

Image result for concussion

The same thing can happen to the brain, except that the bruises are not located in a place the eye can see. However, with the help of imaging technology the bruises (contusions) can be made visible. To a close approximation, computed tomographic (CT) scans and magnetic resonance (MR) scans can “see” a level of detail corresponding to what the naked eye can see, except that the information is presented like slices of a loaf of bread, shown one slice at a time. “Macroscopic” means that the naked eye can see the contusions (with the help of a scanner). If a similar process occurs at a “microscopic” level, it is too small for the eye (and scanner) to see.

CT scans are more useful than MR scans in evaluating patients with acute brain trauma because seriously ill patients can be better monitored while receiving CT scans and because fresh hemorrhages are more apparent. In images created by CT scanners fresh blood appears intensely white, while normal brain tissue appears gray.

Image result for brain contusion

Although contusions can be multiple, they occur in single locations. That’s what “localized” implies. So a brain contusion is both macroscopic and localized. One common pattern of contusions is “coup-contrecoup.” When a moving head is abruptly stopped (as occurs during a fall when it strikes the ground) the brain nearest the point of impact bashes against the inner surface of the hard skull, producing a contusion. That is the “coup” injury. But then there is either a bounce-back of the brain within the skull or a suddenly created vacuum that produces a second “contrecoup” contusion on the opposite pole of the brain.

Contusions can occur in large enough numbers to produce a “salt-and-pepper” appearance on CT scans. Adjacent contusions can also coalesce via further oozing of blood to produce larger blood-deposits. If a collection of blood becomes large enough to compress and distort the rest of the brain, it might require surgical removal.

It is important to realize that injury to brain tissue is not limited to that produced by bleeding. The same physical blow that disrupts blood vessels is also capable of damaging the brain cells directly.

Four Steps To Tripling Your Energy Without Taking Energy Drinks.

increased-energy-levels

Tired? Tired of being tired? You aren’t alone. There are few human qualities more highly sought than energy. It determines our ability to enjoy life, to attract mates, to finish projects, to protect our families, to shape our bodies effectively, and so much more.

While there are endless specific suggestions about herbs, exercises, meditations, supplements, rest patterns and so forth that I could mention, the most important and over-arching components are relatively simple, and available to anyone with the willingness to begin.

Basically, your energy level will be controlled by three physical and one psychological factor.

A) Fitness.

Image result for fitness

There are a variety of different things that contribute to the quality called “fitness,” but a few of them are specific to energy level.

1) Cardio-vascular fitness. A dead minimum of twenty minutes three times a week, just to stay in the game. If you want to create a swift, powerful change, try forty minutes four times a week. Walking is sufficiently intense, if you stay in the “aerobic zone” which can be described as a level of exertion where you can’t sing, but you can still talk!

2) Body-mass index. Unneeded weight is like a sack of wet cement strapped to your back. It eats up energy like crazy. Regardless of what anyone says or implies, there is only one basic way to lose fat: to change the ratio of calories consumed to calories burned. In general, this requires discipline on BOTH ends. Fat loss is a two-headed snake. If you diet but don’t exercise, your metabolism can slow down to a crawl, denying you success. And if you exercise but don’t eat sensibly, well, a pound of fat has about 3500 calories. An hour of running only burns about 350 calories. Do the math.

3) Flexibility. Often overlooked in the search for energy, flexibility is a measurement of tension in the body. A stiff body is like a car with its brakes on. Think how much gas your car would waste!! That gas is your energy, when you carry unnecessary tension. Most stretching activities are less a matter of “lengthening” muscles, tendons, or ligaments than learning how to communicate with your body, to learn how to breathe into tension.

4) Strength. Contrary to popular belief, strength is more in the mind than the body. It is a matter of leverage, concentration, and controlled excitation even more than it is the “size” of the muscles involved. On a physiological level, it is a matter of the percentage of your muscle fibers you can recruit at a given moment. Weight training, or body-weight exercises like Hindu Pushups and Hindu Squats, are great ways to increase strength, which makes physical tasks much easier and less fatiguing.

B ) Controlling food intake.

Image result for food intake

A critical factor. Note that I didn’t say “diet.” At this point, we all pretty much understand that diets don’t work—that any eating plan intended to have long term benefits must represent a change in lifestyle. A few pointers:

1) 3:2:1 ratio of fresh fruits and vegetables to complex carbohydrates to lean proteins. Note that this ratio works for people who are ACTIVE—they need the carbs. If you are trying to lose fat, or are relatively inactive, try reversing the ratio of protein and carbs.

2) Drink more water. The classic recommendation of eight glasses a day is debated, but the truth is that a lot of hunger and fatigue is actually dehydration in disguise. Note: this means water, not beer, soda, or even milk, all of which contain various nutrients or chemicals which actually require water to process through the body. In other words, they use up as much water as they give you.

3) Eat six small meals a day. This helps keep your bloodsugar levels even, which will keep your energy from crashing in the afternoon.

4) Eat today for how you want to FEEL tomorrow. Not for emotional reasons, or just for taste.

Health And Nutrition: Say “No” To Soda And “Yes” To Green Tea.

Drinking-Green-Tea

In the hot days of summer it is easy to reach for a soda to help you cool off. However sodas do not really quench your thirst and there are some other healthier more refreshing alternatives. One of the most refreshing ways to cool off on a hot summer day is drinking a tall glass of iced tea and what better than making it green tea?

People From the Orient have long known the benefits of drinking green tea. In fact so important is this drink in these countries that there is special tea drinking rituals associated with this beverage. Japan is especially famous for this.

Image result for green tea

Green tea: Is made from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis tree. The best green tea is grown in Japan and is harvested in the spring months. Now Australia is trying to cultivate it so that green tea can be available in other months and supply the increasing need for this beverage. Recent research is revealing that this tea is particularly beneficial for your health. It is higher in antitoxins than the traditional black tea drunk in the West. Green tea has also been found to have vitamin C and fluoride.

Green tea has more of these properties than the traditional black teas because of the way it is processed It goes through little or no processing (fermenting or oxidizing) this brings out the antioxidants and vitamins but will reduce the stimulant quality (caffeine) of this tea.

The best way to make green tea hot or cold is to make it with loose leaves. These are easily available in many grocery stores and most health food stores. When making iced tea it is good to steep the tea for about 20-30 minutes. You can just pour the hot water on it and let it cool slowly. Fast cooling will not allow the full taste to come out; so slow cooling at room temperature is best.

How Good Sleep Increases Your Productivity.

getting-better-sleep

Picture this. You wake up one morning and it’s time for you to fix yourself or else you’ll be late. You’ve barely slept and spent most of the time staring at the ceiling. You’re stressed and you want to get back to sleep. As a last resort, you take sleeping pills only to find yourself the next day to be dazed, dizzy and weak at work. You decide to stop the pills and try to sleep normally but once again find yourself faced with the same dilemma. Even if you’re already tired to the bone and look like a raccoon with your perennial eye bags, you still just can’t sleep.

You are not alone. In today’s fast-paced society, sleep deprivation is very common. People nowadays seemed to be so tied up with work—spending many hours at the office. At home, even as they lie down in bed, getting rest is such a challenge. They can’t get their mind of their work and other matters that float inside their head.

Importance of sleep

Image result for good sleep

Needless to say, sleep is very important in the development of one’s body. Health experts and research have already shown that lack of sleep adversely affect people mentally and physically. Lack of sleep makes one so tired and confused, which also increases the chances of making bad decisions and taking unreasonable risks. Medical studies show that extreme cases of sleep deprivation may result in hernia, weakening of muscle tissues, and other problems usually related to physical overuse. Conversely, getting enough sleep boosts one’s immune system and concentration while enhancing one’s overall physical appearance. Studies also point out that people who get enough sleep are more productive compared to their stressed and burned out counterparts.

Side effects of sleeping pills

To address sleep deprivation, many people turn to sedatives and other products that are supposed to improve their sleep. Health experts, however, warn the consumers that these drugs do have side effects. Researches say that one of the major side effects are the reduction of brain cell activity causing short term memory loss. An effect similar to hangover effect are also may also be experienced when over the counter sleeping pills are used. Their research indicates that use of these drugs may also cause drug tolerance, physical side effects like headaches, and withdrawal symptoms. Rebound insomnia specialists added may also occur which according to them are worsening of sleeping disorder compared to time before a particular drug is taken.
